I cannot access the settings - I'm being asked for a password. What should I do

In order to protect your ESET NOD32 Antivirus or ESET Smart Security configuration settings, the program provides an option to establish a user-defined or administrative password to access these settings. This password is separate from the product username and password which was emailed to you upon purchase of the product. This is a password you have set yourself. If you have some passwords you usually use, try them!

If this password has been established and you attempt to access the setup parameters, a dialog window will be displayed requesting the password. In the event that you don't know the password, it must be obtained from the creator. If your system is part of a company network, please contact your network administrator for assistance.

In the event that you created the password and later forgot it, ESET has created an Unlock Utility to remove the administrative password and restore your access to the configuration settings. Please follow the instructions below to use the ESET Unlock Utility:
  1. To download the ESET Unlock Utility please click on one of the following links and save it to your desktop:

    NOTE: The ESET Unlock Utility will ONLY work in Safe Mode for the latest versions of ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus. For step by step instuctions, see Using the Unlock Utility for the latest version of ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus below.
  2. To run the downloaded ESET Unlock Utility, double-click the file named unlock2.7.exe or unlock3.0.exe, depending on the version you downloaded. A window will appear with a numeric unlock ID.

    NOTE: For users of Microsoft Windows Vista or newer (2003, Windows 7), it is necessary to right-click on the ESET Unlock Utility and Run as Administrator.
  3. Contact our support department, and include the unlock ID displayed in this window.
  4. The response from ESET Customer Care will contain a corresponding numeric unlock code. Please run the ESET Unlock Utility again and enter the numeric unlock code provided by ESET Customer Care.

    NOTE: For users of Microsoft Windows Vista or newer (2003, Windows 7), it is necessary to right-click on the ESET Unlock Utility and Run as Administrator.
  5. Once you have entered the unlock code, please press ENTER. The administrative password should now be removed and access to the configuration settings restored.


Using the Unlock Utility for newest version of ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus
  1. Restart your computer. While the computer is restarting, continue pressing the F8 key. NOTE: On some keyboards, you need to press a special key ("F-Lock") to activate function keys F1 – F12.
  2. In the initial character-based menu, select Safe mode.
  3. After re-boot is complete, right-click the file named unlock3.0.exe and Run as Administrator.
  4. Continue from step 3 above to finish running the ESET Unlock Utility.
